The client:

SSAB is a leading Swedish steel manufacturer with a global presence, employing over 16,000 people across 50 countries. Its Borlänge site, which spans 350,000 m², is a key production facility facing significant operational challenges due to extreme heat, gases, and chemicals.

Challenges:

• The legacy lighting system operated 24/7, making it difficult to achieve energy efficiency goals. Inconsistent lighting requirements across different areas led to safety risks and reduced productivity. One-size-fits-all lighting was inefficient, negatively impacting worker health and visibility in restricted and hazardous areas.

Project Vision and Objectives:

• The project aimed to minimize energy consumption and maintenance costs. Enhance employee well-being and workplace safety through improved lighting quality. Extend the lifespan of fixtures by implementing dynamic lighting control systems.

Solution:

SSAB conducted an extensive facility evaluation and requested proposals from multiple vendors. Tiensu Energy Solutions, in collaboration with COOR AB, was selected due to its advanced lighting technology and customized smart solutions.

Development and Implementation:

• The project ran from 2017 to 2022, spanning three phases. Installation was carried out during full 24/7 operations, requiring close coordination between project managers and SSAB’s production teams.

Results:

• SSAB achieved annual energy savings of approximately 15,000,000 kWh. The project improved lighting levels, ensuring consistent brightness across all areas.
