The client:

Hydro Extrusions Sweden operates manufacturing facilities in Finspång and Vetlanda, as well as an aluminum casthouse in Sjunnen. The company, formerly known as Sapa Group, was established in Sweden, with its first production plant built in 1963. Today, Hydro Extrusions Sweden has a total of 90,000 square meters of production facilities.

Challenges:

Hydro faced multiple challenges, including inadequate lighting, inconsistent fixture selection, and potential fire hazards from aging fittings. High maintenance costs due to the harsh production environments. Health, safety, and environmental (HSE) concerns due to insufficient lighting levels. Substantial energy costs associated with outdated lighting infrastructure.

Objective:

The goal was to implement a smart lighting control system that would reduce energy consumption and increase ROI. Extend service life of hardware while improving health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. Explore IoT integration beyond lighting to enhance efficiency.

Solution:

Hydro Extrusions Sweden conducted a thorough supplier evaluation and formed a dedicated project team to assess potential partners. Tiensu Energy Solutions was selected to deploy a new generation of smart lighting fixtures integrated with an intelligent control system.

Project Progress:

The project began in 2017 and aimed for full-scale implementation across all factories by 2022. The Vetlanda facility was scheduled for completion in September 2023, and the Finspång facility by May 2023. Tiensu’s project managers worked closely with production teams to ensure seamless integration during ongoing operations.

Results and Achievements:

Targeted energy savings of 7,000,000 kWh annually – with projections indicating this goal will be exceeded. The project has provided the fastest ROI among Hydro Greener Sweden initiatives. Integration of System with Hydro’s Energy Management System, ensuring long-term sustainability and operational efficiency.
