Case Study – Intelligent Lighting controls – ABB

The client:

ABB in Skien is a crucial enterprise in Norway and a fundamental part of the Norwegian ABB structure. One of the largest industrial facility in Skien, with a workforce of almost 700 individuals. ABB occupies roughly 35,000 square meters of manufacturing space.

Challenges:
The facility had outdated lighting systems that required substantial maintenance and had high operational costs. Additionally, the system had limited adaptability to accommodate evolving demands.

Project Vision and Objective Realization:
Prior to the upgrade, the plant consumed an average of 4,321 kWh daily, with yearly maintenance costs estimated at NOK 270,000. The objective was to reduce energy consumption by 85%, eliminate maintenance costs, improve light levels, and ensure long-term sustainability over 10 years.

Solution:
ABB Skien engaged an external consultant to evaluate the facility and requested proposals from multiple companies. The selection was based on price, technology, and quality, ultimately leading to Tiensu Energy Solutions being chosen in partnership with Caverion AS.

Development and Implementation:
The project was executed between 2020-2021 while the facility remained operational. Tiensu’s project managers worked closely with the production team to ensure a seamless integration without disrupting operations.

Results:

ABB achieved the targeted 85% reduction in energy consumption, saving 3,552 kWh per day (equivalent to 1.3 million kWh annually). Improved illumination levels, ensuring consistent lighting throughout the facility’s lifespan (estimated at 25 years, L70 standard). Eliminated maintenance costs, enhancing operational efficiency and cost savings.
